Alabama State trooper Keith Autrey has been given the Alabama Department of Public Safetys highest award for heroism.
He was inside the Gadsden Country Club on April 9 after playing golf when a woman came inside with a fully loaded Ruger .38 special revolver, demanding to see her husband.
Autreys instincts as a trained law enforcement officer kicked in. He repeatedly instructed the woman to put down the weapon, but she refused each time.
Then the woman pointed the gun at Autrey. He grabbed her arm, pinned it to the floor and disarmed her, giving country club employees time to call for assistance.
His actions led to the presentation by Col. J. Christopher Murphy, director of the Department of Public Safety, of the Distinguished Service Award during a recent ceremony in Montgomery.
