A Gadsden firm is one of seven in the state which has been awarded funds for use in the re-training of employees, in an effort to remain competitive, and hopefully avoid lay-off`s at the facility.

Alabama Governor Bob Riley announced a total of $158,000 in funding for those seven companies, with Keystone Foods in Gadsden receiving $24,500 to be used in training a group of more than 60 workers in more efficient manufacturing processes.

The company had been in east Gadsden for 20 years before moving to its new facility at Airport & Steele Station roads - providing jobs to around 520 people with the prospect of adding another 150 positions in the future.

Keystone provides chicken to restaurants such as McDonalds and Taco Bell.

The grants - coming from the states Incumbent Worker Training Program - will be used to upgrade employees skills in such areas, as safe operations management, supply chain management and lean manufacturing processes.

The Incumbent Worker Training Program, is funded by state allocations and the federal Workforce Investment Act.
