Just about everyone that is a property owner in Chattooga County knows that their taxes will go up because the county and the local school system are facing declining revenues. Just how much those taxes will be going up, has yet to be determined.

Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters, said that the county`s millage rate would be increasing between 2.7 and 3.3 mills. Winters said that the total tax digest (the numbers used to figure the value of property in Chattooga County) fell by 15% over the last year.

What remains to be seen is how much more Chattooga County taxpayers will have to pay in property taxes, when the Chattooga County Board of Education announces their millage rate increase. The four day school week adopted by the Board of Education will not make up for the nearly $2 million budget shortfall for the county school system.

Commissioner Winters said along with the millage rate increase he is looking at budget cuts - and some of those cuts may be with trash collection. Winters said that he` considering cutting the hours of service - or even the days of operation, at county dumpster sights as a means of saving money.

Winters went on to say, that with six natural disasters in the past fourteen months, the county has spent out between $425,000 and $600,000 in disaster related clean-up.

Also, the county still has not received money from the federal government that was promised after the flood in Trion.
