Governor Bob Riley has awarded a grant in the amount of $150,000 which will enable the
Alabama Forestry Commission to establish what is being referred to as a `wood to energy`
demonstration project.
The idea behind the project is to produce energy through the use of timber waste products
as a means of lessening our country`s dependance upon foreign oil.
The funding will provide equipment to convert wood chips and scraps to steam energy.
The Alabama Forestry Foundation will team up with the Alabama Forestry Cooperative to
set up a demonstration at a plant south of Montgomery, with data being collected in order
to show the benefits of the process to businesses and to industry leaders.
