The field at JSU stadium - known as Paul Snow Stadium since 1961 - is now officially Burgess-Snow Field, and will now also honor former Coach Bill Burgess who led the Gamecocks to the 1992 NCAA Division II National Championship - and - was named the 1992 NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.
In his 12 seasons as head coach, Burgess won four Gulf South Conference crowns, and claimed five consecutive invitations to the NCAA Division II play-offs - making it to the title game, in 3 of those seasons. He finished with a career record of 84-49 & 4.
The name change was recently approved by the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees, during their regular quarterly meeting.
A gathering of JSU alumni from Cherokee County - along w/current members of the JSU sports program - held a luncheon in Centre, with those in attendance including, Representative Richard Lindsey, Former Centre Mayor Phil Powell, Probate Judge Melvyn Salter - and the Director of Athletics at JSU, Oval Jaynes among others.
The brand-new expansion project is designed to meet the growing needs of the sports program - increasing seating at the stadium to 24,000 - there`ll also be an addition of more than 300 dorms, known as stadium housing.
Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium will be dedicated during a pre-game ceremony - to be held at the 2010 home opener - which is scheduled for September 11th against Chattanooga.
