CENTRE CITY COUNCIL MEETING
Marc Summers
03-11-2010
This week`s meeting of the Centre City Council was a relatively lengthy affair.
Mayor Pro Tem Bess Yarborough was presiding, as a number of issues were brought before the
Council.
A local home-owners association attended the meeting in order to express their unhappiness with
the conditions of streets in their sub-division. Derrick Wheeler - representing the Raintree Home
Owners Association - told Council Members their streets were terrible and potentially dangerous
with large pot-holes - adding that the streets were not built properly, before the Council accepted
them into their system.
Wheeler went on to say, that he felt the Council should be responsible for repairs; the Mayor Pro
Tem stated that the County Engineer Roger Hall, inspected streets in that area prior to acceptance
- and that the City has a letter dated January 11th, 2007, stating the streets in question did met the
County`s criteria for being properly built - and - based upon that letter, granted acceptance.
The Council, did however, tell Wheeler that they would look into the matter, in regard to current
conditions and would speak to the City Attorney to see what could be done.
In other business, Carolyn Landrum, President of the Weiss Lake Improvement Association, met
with the Council to offer an update on the activities of the organization and what they`re doing as
part of the on-going effort to clean up the Lake - reminding everyone that this year`s `Renew Our
Rivers` Campaign is set for April 5th - 10th; and in conclusion she requested that the Weiss Lake
Improvement Association be considered for an appropriation during the City Council`s upcoming
budget meetings.
Also, during this weeks` meeting, the Council approved the purchase of a Police Car, at a cost of
$25,179.92 from Sunny King Ford of Anniston; Centre Fire Chief Kevin Ware also requested the
purchase of a used ambulance which could be utilized by the department for equipment and for a
`cool-down` unit for firefighters following fire-calls. The cost of the vehicle was listed at $14,999
- the Council voted to move forward with buying the vehicle.
The next regular meeting of the Centre City Council is set for Tuesday, March 23rd at 5:00pm.
