CENTRE The pieces of the puzzle are finally starting to fit together for Cherokee County girls basketball coach Travis Barnes.
And they couldnt come together at a better time.
After trailing rival Alexandria by four points at halftime Saturday, the Lady Warriors kicked their game in gear and came away with a 56-49 victory in the Class 4A, Area 12 championship game.
Its the first area championship in Barnes five-year tenure with the Lady Warriors (9-11). The reward is hosting a Class 4A sub-regional game on Thursday against the loser of Mondays Area 14 championship Guntersville-DAR game.
Against Alexandria (14-13), Deidra Davis led the charge with 15 points, four assists and two steals, earning the All-Area Tournament Most Valuable Player award.
Junior guard Karisa McEwen along with Ray, Tori Davis and Candace Blanchard, joined Deidra Davis on the All-Tournament team.
After battling No. 7 Gaston almost tooth-and-nail in the first half of Saturdays Class 1A, Area 12 championship, two back-to-back 3-pointers in the third quarter by Morgan Beaird proved to be the No. 9 Panthers undoing in a 42-33 setback.
The loss sends Spring Garden on the road in Class 1A sub-regional action on Thursday at Athens Bible. The Lady Gaylesville Trojans defeated Skyline 54-37 in Area 14 championship action on Saturday.
