GADSDEN WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY OF FRAUD

A Gadsden woman pleaded guilty in Etowah County Circuit Court today to welfare fraud, according to a news release from the office of Attorney General Troy King. Brandy Wright, 31, pleaded guilty to third-degree theft, a misdemeanor. She was ordered to pay restitution of $3,842. She was sentenced to one year of imprisonment, which was suspended, and she was placed on probation for two years, according to the news release. He commended Assistant Attorney General Ferris Stephens and special investigator Larry Chambers for their work in the case, as well as Etowah County Department of Human Resources Director Jon Costa and Jacqueline Cherry, caseworker, and Gwin Smith, supervisor for the northeast regional claims unit. According to the news release, prosecution of welfare fraud is pending in 38 counties, including DeKalb, Calhoun and Blount.
