A company known as GTM Energy Partners has apparently expressed an interest in coal mining in Dekalb County.

The area under consideration would consist of almost 750 acres in the northern portion of DeKalb County, west of Highway 75. The land is situated near the Jackson County and Georgia state line.

According to County Engineer Phillip Widner, the Alabama Surface Mining Commission must notify local governments when an application is filed, adding that he was notified on May 2nd. A spokesperson for GTM Energy Partners says the company has been in the business of mining coal since March of last year, adding that the area being looked at in the county, shows what they consider to be tremendous potential for quality coal in large quantities.

Currently, the application has only been filed and is the midst of a public commentary period, a notification period requiring public notice of the intent to mine coal in a specific area.

Whether or not that application will actually be approved remains up to the state Surface Mining Commission.
