A three vehicle accident in Etowah County shut down a portion of I-59 near Attalla for an extended period of time on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Alabama State Troopers Post at Jacksonville, that accident occurred just after 3:00pm, in the northbound lane of traffic at the Alabama Highway 77 overpass, and involved a 2000 Chevrolet driven by 34 year old Bettina Pierce of Glencoe, a 98 GMC driven by David Carroll of Gadsden, and a 2008 Ford driven by Jason Kilgo of Pell City.

Pierce, and a five year old passenger in her vehicle, were both injured after her vehicle struck the overpass support column.

Pierce was trapped in the car for almost an hour before finally being freed from the wreckage by emergency crews, after which she was airlifted by LifeSaver Helicopter to UAB for treatment. The child was transported to Riverview Regional Medical Center.

Both parties are currently listed in stable condition.

Both of the other drivers involved escaped injury.

That accident remains under investigation.
