With the lack of on-call Neurosurgeons in northwest Georgia sending more and more critically injured patients to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Erlanger has decided to sell the air-transport portion of its LifeForce Helicopter Program.
Med-Trans will acquire 16 employees and all three of the choppers for $12.1 million.
An Erlanger representative said it has become difficult for the hospital to manage the capital costs associated with replacing the aging fleet of helicopters, and Med-Trans has agreed to upgrade the fleet which has choppers in Chattanooga and Sparta, Tennessee and in Calhoun, Georgia.
The Texas based firm signed an agreement last September to purchase eleven new Bell Helicopters over the next three years. Erlanger will retain its squad of flight nurses and medical technicians.
